M3x Battery Technology
Our new, in-house designed EV battery architecture known as M3x employs advanced and patented thermal management technology to achieve high performance through high charging and discharging rates.
The architecture follows a modular concept with cylindrical form factor cells giving enhanced adaptability for a wide range of applications.
Our M3x battery technology allows multiple options across the following parameters:
- Cell supplier, specification and chemistry
- Package space, size and weight
- Voltage, power and energy storage
The battery design employs a water-glycol cooling system with performance similar to immersion cooling, but with reduced complexity and less weight. This allows for maximised charge rates and sustained high performance.
Comprehensive modelling and analysis has been conducted on M3x to omptimise the design architecture for sustained high performance.
Thermal analysis was focused on
- Electric current density magnitude
- Internal cell temperature variation
- Cell-to-cell temperature variation
Structural analysis covered
- UN38.3 regulation requirements for safety during transport
- UN ECE R100 regulation requirements for in-vehicle safety
- Vehicle crash regulation requirements
Validation testing has been completed with bespoke thermal test rigs to evaluate thermal runaway risks
Our new M3x battery technology uses a novel, patented cooling concept to achieve very small temperature differences between cells and elevated prevention properties for thermal runaway propagation.
MAHLE Powertrain's M3x battery technology delivers sustained high performance.
