Downsizing demo vehicles impress the industry

MAHLE Powertrain has installed it's latest specification, 1.2l 3-cyl downsizing engine into two VW Passat Estates for demonstration drives on public roads. Fitted with a high specification, single turbocharger from Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems, this engine produces 120 kW (163 PS) whilst also returning an impressive 5.8 litre/100 km (49 UK mpg) and only 135 g/km CO2 on the NEDC. Perhaps even more surprising is the high torque output of 286 Nm (30 bar BMEP) which is available from only 1,600 rpm. These output levels provide the demo cars with very lively performance, even in a 1,600 kg vehicle, and the three cylinder engine emits a characterful note without excessive NVH intrusion. Demonstration drives have recently been conducted at various locations throughout the UK and Europe and further refinements will be made as the engine's performance and calibration is optimised.
