MAHLE Screensaver

The MAHLE Screensaver is a three-minute animation of the MAHLE downsizing engine in photo-realistic quality.

The well-established MAHLE downsizing engine is a 1.2 litre, 3-cylinder gasoline power unit designed for use in a medium sized (circa 1,600 kg) vehicle with a specific power output of up to 120 kW/litre (in 2-stage turbo form). When compared to typical gasoline engines in this class of vehicle, this represents a downsizing of 50% - capable of delivering a fuel economy benefit of up to 30%.

The advanced demonstrator engine employs many of MAHLE's latest cutting-edge technologies including forged pistons, twin overhead assembled camshafts with dual-independent cam phasing, central direct injection with spray-guided multi-hole injectors, air-water charge air cooling, a split cooling system with electric water pump and four lightweight fabricated valves per cylinder.

To further optimise fuel consumption, various measures have been taken to reduce friction loses including the short stroke configuration, through-bolting to minimise bore distortion, MAHLE NIKASIL parent bore coating and low friction power cell with innovative coatings on piston pins and rings. The second generation, downsizing engine, fitted with a single turbocharger from Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems, still delivers a healthy 100 kW/litre (163 hp) and has now been installed in two demonstrator vehicles to allow the impressive combination of performance and economy to be experienced through real-world driving.
