Combustion System

Combustion system development

A robust combustion system is a key requirement in order to achieve the increasingly stringent emissions and fuel economy targets worldwide.

Our Approach

MAHLE Powertrain has developed a combustion system development process in order to optimise the different combustion chamber parameters for the specific requirements of the engine. This process approach uses significant analysis and simulation at the early stages of the design to balance charge motion with flow and carry out initial injector targeting studies as well as cam profile selection and performance optimisation.

The development process incorporates the following steps:

  • Base combustion chamber layout
  • Moving geometry CFD for port, piston and injector optimisation
  • Steady state port flow measurements
  • Single and multi-cylinder optimisation

Our Tool, Facilities and Services

  • CFD code (Star-CCM)
  • Steady state cylinder head flow rig
  • Injector flow rig (University collaboration)
  • Single cylinder research engine (thermodynamic and optical)
  • State of the art engine dynamometer facility offers steady state and transient test capability

Customer Benefits

  • MAHLE Powertrain's history of developing and optimising combustion systems for a range of different engine concepts
  • Experience of combustion system design for high Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) operation
  • Unique combination of engineering services with engine component expertise (development + production)
